Students Get Crafty and Cozy
As Arizona's weather shifts towards the fall, the days are getting shorter, and temperatures are dropping... slightly. Students are pulling out their warm and cozy clothes. The cool and comfortable fall weather inspired UAT students and Resident Assistants (RAs) to come together for a blanket making party! Students got creative by combining different patterned fabric before cozy-ing up in their new creations.
The blankets were made using the "no-sew" fleece method, which doesn't require any sewing skills, making it a fun and easy activity for participants of all skill levels.
How to Make a Knotted Fleece Blanket
Supplies:
- Two kinds of fleece fabric (as big or small as you like)
- Scissors
Directions:
- Line up the two pieces of fleece fabric with one on top of the other.
- Trim any excess fabric and the selvage edge.
- Measure and cut out a square at each corner. The square should be the same length you plan to cut the fringe, about four to six inches.
- Cut one-inch-wide strips around the blanket.
- Tie the two layers of fleece together with a double knot.
- Once knots are tied all the way around the blanket, you are finished!
Creating opportunities to bond over building blankets is one way RAs encourage students come out of their rooms and get involved in campus activities creating new friendships. This seasonal event is one of many hosted by the University’s residence staff, which usually take place in Founder’s Hall. There is a calendar in the lobby of the dorm with all the student activities listed for the month. Make sure to check it out next time you're walking by to make sure you aren't missing out on any fun activities like blanket making!
