Good Morning IoT Contest Turns AI Dreams into Reality

In late November, University of Advancing Technology (UAT) students participated in the Good Morning IoT Contest, the 3rd Delos AI Coding Contest for Westworld. For AI students, it was an opportunity to turn their dreams into reality, as Delos was looking for AI (Artificial Intelligence) coders for Westworld, and contest winners are considered for these positions.

In only seven days, participants worked to create AI programs and present them at UAT to be judged by faculty and guest judges. The projects were tasked to be something useful, not just an AI demo, and judges were specifically looking for projects that featured multiple AI abilities.

Contestants were able to use any coding language they chose. Judges rated the AI, innovation, and user experience, and the AI had to include one or more of the following:

• Speech To Text (Listening)

• Text to Speech (Talking)

• Facial Recognition (Seeing)

• Emotion Detection in Humans (Empathy and Understanding Emotions)

• Reading the intent in text correctly (Comprehension)

• Object classification (Identifying items and location in pictures)

• Machine Learning Cyber Security

• Mapping

• Pathfinding

• Self-Driving

The contest concluded on Friday, November 15, at noon and nine projects were submitted in multiple disciplines.

IoT projects included an escape room A/R mobile app that reacts to its surroundings, and Reign and Rebellion, a multiplayer video game. Other AI projects included:

• Big Vegas at Large – adaptive path finding

• Spyro of Crime – sensing proximity and sound

• Dezerted – Deterministic routing and behavior

• UFOAT – mapping and pathfinding

Lindsey Boggs won for Spyro of Crime, Miguel Hernandez won for his CS project called AutoTree, a graphical AVL tree that is semi self-balancing using OO, and Darin Polermo won for his escape room A/R — also taking home Best in Show.

According to Dr. Jill Coddington, UAT’s Program Champion for Advancing Computer Science, Robotics and Embedded Systems, WEB, and Artificial Intelligence, the program was a great success, with excellent participation and outcomes.
