Hope Thoms' academic path has been truly impressive. Halfway through her time at University of Advancing Technology (UAT), she graduated with an Associate of Arts in Game Design, an Associate of Science in Game Programming, and in August 2024 she completed her Bachelor of Arts in Game Design, she graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning spots on the President’s List and in the Alpha Beta Kappa National Honor Society.
Choosing UAT and Achieving Milestones
“When I started searching for colleges it was tough, but UAT turned out to be exactly what I needed.” Hope also mentioned a major milestone was graduating with her associate degrees halfway through her journey was a confidence boost and made completing her bachelor’s degree feel more achievable.
Hope’s Student Innovation Project (SIP) was another highlight of her journey here at UAT. “Completing it was a huge relief and a source of pride,” she says. She also mentioned the “World Building” class, where she developed a 57-page screenplay and game assets, was another standout experience. “It let me focus on creativity without game constraints.” Also, professor Dr. Daniel Pike’s support in encouraging her to join the honors program was transformative. “His advice was crucial in helping me discover my passion for writing."
Balancing Life and Academics
Finding the balance between work and life was challenging. “Realizing that perfection isn’t always possible was key,” Hope reflects. “Watching Harry Potter movies became my way to unwind and regain balance.”
Advice for Students
Hope's advice to all students, “Turn in your work, seek feedback, use tutors, and communicate with professors. Make friends and find a work-life balance. Enjoy the journey and stay focused on what you love.”
