How to Stand Out in Your Job Search: Insights from Recruiting Expert, Tara Bethell

In a competitive job market, students and job seekers must find ways to stand out. I recently had the opportunity to speak with a recruiting expert about what makes candidates memorable and how they can maximize their chances of landing an interview. Here are the key takeaways.

Research the Company and Use Keywords Wisely

One of the most important things a candidate can do before applying for a job is research the company. Understanding the company’s values, mission, and expectations will help applicants tailor their resumes and cover letters effectively. Additionally, incorporating keywords from the job description is crucial, but overloading a resume with them can backfire. Many companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) that scan resumes for relevance, but authenticity matters more than a perfect keyword match. Recruiters look for candidates who genuinely align with the role, not those who simply game the system.

To Add a Photo or Not?

Including a photo on a resume is a debated topic. While it can help build personal branding—especially for entrepreneurs or those marketing themselves to a specific audience—it also has the potential to introduce bias. If a photo aligns with a brand or industry niche, it may be beneficial. However, if there's any concern that a picture might lead to discrimination or bias, it’s best to let qualifications and experience speak for themselves.

Unique Personal Branding Strategies

One particularly creative personal branding strategy is using different professional headshots on business cards. Tara shared the story of someone who had multiple headshots taken and printed on different business cards, making them more memorable. Whether it's unique business cards, an engaging online presence, or a standout personal project, candidates should aim to leave a lasting impression.

The Power of Networking
A strong resume alone isn't enough—networking is key. Attending industry events, engaging with professionals on LinkedIn, and participating in relevant meetups can open doors. Tara emphasized how important it is for students to attend events, connect with industry leaders, and tag them in social media posts. These connections can lead to unexpected opportunities, whether through direct hiring managers or extended professional networks.

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone
Ultimately, job seekers need to take proactive steps to stand out. Whether that means attending networking events, engaging with industry professionals on LinkedIn, or finding creative ways to market themselves, stepping outside of their comfort zone is essential for success.

By implementing these strategies, students and job seekers can significantly improve their chances of catching the attention of recruiters and securing job opportunities in their desired fields.
