This spring, the University of Advancing Technology (UAT) Honors Program kicked off the semester with one of its favorite traditions: a social outing designed to bring students together beyond the classroom.
On Saturday, February 21, a group of UAT Honors students headed to the annual Arizona Matsuri Festival in downtown Phoenix. Held each February at Steele Indian School Park, the weekend-long festival celebrates Japanese culture through food, performances, art, and community engagement.
Throughout the day, students immersed themselves in a vibrant cultural experience. Live performances filled the park, including powerful Taiko drumming demonstrations—an energetic and traditional Japanese art form that captivated the crowd. Attendees also enjoyed traditional dance performances, musical groups, martial arts demonstrations, and even a tea ceremony that highlighted centuries-old customs.
Of course, no festival experience is complete without food. Students explored a wide variety of Asian-inspired food trucks, sampling everything from dumplings and steamed buns to matcha-flavored ice cream. The vendor booths were equally diverse, featuring items ranging from anime collectibles to beautifully crafted kimonos.
For UAT Honors students, the outing was more than just a day at a festival. It was an opportunity to connect with peers, explore global cultures, and build community outside of academic life. By hosting several social events each semester, the Honors Program reinforces its commitment to creating meaningful student experiences that balance intellectual growth with cultural engagement.
As the semester continues, UAT Honors looks forward to more opportunities for students to learn, connect, and experience the world beyond campus.
