UAT’s (University of Advancing Technology) Summer 2026 continued with summer camp traditions with our first annual STEM camp for high school students at out campus in Tempe, AZ.
The University of Advancing Technology (UAT) welcomed student STEM leaders from across Arizona to campus July 11–12 for the Arizona Chief Science Officers (CSO) Summer Cabinet Meeting, a leadership event that empowers students to shape the future of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) in their schools and communities.
The Chief Science Officers program is made up of students in grades 6–12 who are elected by their peers to serve as STEM ambassadors and leaders. Throughout their time as Chief Science Officers, students develop workforce and employability skills, collaborate with STEM professionals, and design action plans that inspire innovation and increase STEM engagement in their schools and local communities.
As part of the Summer Leadership Institute, students gathered at UAT to strengthen their leadership abilities, connect with fellow STEM advocates, and collaborate on initiatives that will positively impact their schools and local communities. The experience also provided opportunities to engage with educators, industry professionals, and higher education partners who share a commitment to expanding STEM education and career pathways.
One of the highlights of the weekend was UAT's annual Bridge Building Challenge, a tradition that has become a favorite activity during the Chief Science Officers Leadership Institute. Working in teams, students designed and constructed handmade bridges under a time limit before putting their engineering skills to the test. The challenge encouraged creativity, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork while demonstrating how engineering principles come to life through hands-on learning.
Chief Science Officers champion STEM and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) by encouraging greater interest and participation among their peers. They serve as a bridge between schools, industry, universities, and community organizations, helping create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that build awareness of STEM careers and develop essential workforce skills.
Working together as a statewide Chief Science Officers Cabinet, these student leaders tackle challenges affecting STEM education and engagement at the local, state, and national levels. Through collaboration, advocacy, and service, they help shape a future where innovation is more accessible and inclusive for all students.
This commitment to empowering the next generation of innovators reflects UAT’s continued dedication to STEM education and community engagement — a mission recently recognized with the Community Partner Award at the 2026 STEMMYs, honoring organizations that make a meaningful impact in advancing STEM opportunities across Arizona
